Far too many times, either with my own personal airplane, or with the work airplane, I have been tasked with finding the “closest suitable” airport to an address or point of interest. I had relied on Google Maps, and a host of other tools, to figure out which airport is the closest in terms of driving distance to my destination.

Having been both a pilot and software engineer since my late teenage years, I decided to put together a program that allows you to

1. Find the closest airport (driving distance, not air miles) – Air miles to your location is often useless as there is no direct driving route
2. Find the airport that meets your criteria (runway length, fuel, etc…)
3. See all information about the airport (most of which you cannot see by looking at the AFD), frequencies, etc…
4. Look at approach plates, airport diagrams, and other important information
5. Look at total flying and driving time to see the closest total trip distance

A few disclaimers:

1. At this time, we only have US Airports
2. We don’t rely on any external service to calculate driving directions (for our initial scan), but then we give you the option to verify the times using Google Maps for driving directions
3. We will be expanding this to include weather in the near future
